AppleWorks and iWork are Apple's answers to Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. Unlike some competing word processors, like Corel WordPerfect, which include formats compatible with Microsoft Word, the default file types associated with AppleWorks and iWork are not supported by MS Office. Business professionals collaborating with users operating on a Mac environment, or who want to be able to access their Mac files on their Windows PCs, must find workarounds to open the CWK and .PAGES files in Microsoft Word.
Convert CWK Format in Windows
1.Open Microsoft Word. Click the 'File' tab. Select 'Options' from the menu and then choose 'Advanced' from the left pane.
2.Check 'Confirm File Format Conversion on Open' and then click 'OK.' Press 'Ctrl-O' and select the CWK file.
3.Choose 'Recover Text From Any File (.)' from the Files of Type drop-down menu and then click 'Open.'
Convert PAGES Format in Windows
1.Click the .PAGES file and press 'F2.' Change the '.pages' format to '.zip' (without the quotations) and then press 'Enter.'
2.Double-click the ZIP archive and extract the contents to a folder on the hard drive.
3.Use an online converter like PDF to Word, DOC2PDF or PDF Online (see links in Resources) to convert the Preview.PDF file to DOC or DOCX. Open the converted file in Word.
Convert PAGES Format in OS X
1.Open iWork Pages. Click 'File,' click 'Open' and then select the PAGES file, or choose the document from the Open Recent drop-down menu in the Template Chooser window.
2.Click 'File,' then 'Save As' or 'Duplicate,' depending on which version of OS X you're using. Check 'Save Copy As' and then select 'Word Document' from the associated drop-down menu.
3.Click 'Advanced Options.' Select 'Copy Audio and Movies into Document' and 'Copy Template Images into Document.'
4.Choose the location -- such as a flash drive or network share -- to which to save the duplicate file. Click 'Save.'
5.Log on to the PC and open Microsoft Word. Click 'File,' click 'Open' and navigate to the drive or share containing the DOC file. Double-click the document to open it.
Tip
- Formatting options may be lost when converting the PDF or CWK files.
